Our Story

The roots we come from

Our culture, our history, and the living traditions that guide our healing work today.

The Comcaac

Keepers of Otac

The Comcaac, known to the outside world as the Seri, are an indigenous people of the Sonoran coast in Mexico. They live along the Gulf of California in the communities of Punta Chueca and El Desemboque, with Tiburón Island at the heart of their ancestral territory. "Comcaac" means simply "the people," and they are among the few nations in Mexico to have kept their language, a language unlike any other on earth, and their traditions almost wholly intact since first contact.

For generations they have lived in deep relationship with the desert and the sea as seafarers, fishers, gatherers, artists, and keepers of song and ceremony. Among the medicines they carry is the secretion of the Sonoran Desert toad, what the wider world calls Bufo (5-MeO-DMT) and what the Comcaac know as Otac. They are among the first peoples to have worked with this medicine in ceremony, and Ancestral Encounters walks in alliance with them, honoring and helping preserve the lineage this knowledge comes from.

What we hold sacred

Our beliefs

Respect the medicine

We honor the toad and the medicine it offers as sacred, never a commodity. Otac carries a cosmic lineage far older than us, and we approach it with reverence, humility, and gratitude for all it gives.

Honor the tribe & traditions

This medicine was kept alive by the Comcaac people. We hold their traditions close and share their story openly, so that everyone who receives Otac knows the tribe and the lineage it comes from.

A bridge to the modern world

We weave ancestral ceremony together with Western knowledge and care, preparing this medicine to heal safely and meaningfully in the modern world, without losing the spirit of where it began.
